Gothic Paris is an online learning experience that takes students of Professor Sarah Grace Heller of the Department of French and Italian on a tour of Paris in the 12th-13th centuries, the reign of the Capetian kings, and the era of the Gothic style. Through the exploration of an interactive medieval map, students explore the Parisian streets of around 1292, recreated based on textual records and other documents. Students enter the distinct quarters of the Left Bank, Ile de la Cité, and Right Bank to study the streets in detail. They navigate through the map by dragging the computer mouse to move, enlarge and reduce the map. By clicking on names, key architectural sites are graphically elevated and students virtually enter these sites to learn more by viewing slide shows. Student projects focused on different sites, people, and aspects of daily medieval life in Paris appear on the map as various medieval icons.
