AI Fluency in the German Classroom — Preparing Students for a Multilingual, Tech-Driven Job Market

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in professional environments, Ohio State University’s AI Fluency initiative aims to equip students across disciplines with foundational AI literacy. In the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, this initiative is being actively implemented in German language courses (1101–1103), where students not only develop linguistic proficiency but also gain practical experience using AI tools to enhance communication, critical thinking, and intercultural competence.

This presentation showcases how AI integration in the German curriculum prepares students for careers that demand both second language skills and AI fluency. Through targeted activities, students learn to collaborate with AI tools like Microsoft Copilot and to create effective AI prompts by using the CLEAR method (Clarity, Layout, Examples, Aim, and Relevance), developing transferable skills for fields such as international business, diplomacy, and global tech.

Key examples include:

  • AI Module on Academic Integrity: Students engage in guided discussions using AI-generated scenarios to explore academic misconduct, fostering ethical awareness and digital responsibility in both English and German.
  • TalkAbroad Preparation with Copilot: Learners use AI prompts to simulate conversations, brainstorm questions, and rehearse vocabulary before engaging with native speakers. This scaffolds confidence and improves communicative outcomes.
  • ACTFL-Aligned Writing & Speaking Tasks: Instructors use AI to generate personalized prompts that match ACTFL proficiency levels. Students receive tailored feedback and revise their work with AI support, deepening their understanding of genre, register, and accuracy.
  • Reading Comprehension Support: AI-generated texts and vocabulary glossaries help students tackle authentic materials. These resources are adapted to learners’ proficiency levels, promoting autonomy and reading strategies.
  • 🛠️ Prompt Creation with CLEAR: Students and instructors collaboratively design AI prompts using the CLEAR method, encouraging metacognitive reflection and digital creativity.

By embedding AI into foundational language instruction, our program empowers students to become agile communicators and informed digital citizens. This presentation will offer practical strategies, sample assignments, and student reflections to illustrate how AI fluency and language learning can be mutually reinforcing. Attendees will leave with adaptable models for integrating AI into their own language programs, aligned with institutional goals and workforce demands.
