Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Second Language Studies (SLS)

The Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in SLS is a degree enhancement that is added to your transcript after completing the required coursework and applying for the degree enhancement through the Graduate School.

Requirements for the Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in SLS

  1. Prerequisites
    • One introductory course to linguistics.
    • One basic teaching methods course, e.g., Teaching [x language] at the College Level
  2. SLS Coursework
    • Minimum of 10 hours spread over at least 3 approved courses. 
    • Twenty hours of graduate-level courses is the maximum allowance for a GIS. 
    • Courses must come from two or more graduate programs outside of the student’s home program. 
    • Must receive a grade of “B” or better or “S” in each course comprising the GIS. 
    • Only courses that count toward elective credits in a student’s program may be applied to the GIS core courses. However, GIS prerequisite courses may count toward required credits in the student’s program.

Procedure:

  • Contact the Director of the GIS in SLS, Dr. Wynne Wong (wong.240@osu.edu), to express intention to do the GIS. 
  • Use this audit form to keep track of coursework as you complete the GIS. 
  • Once you are close to completion of the GIS (with all courses approved, and the minimum GPA met), request a final audit from Director. 
  • Once approved, you will submit final application through the Graduate School via Grad Forms, no later than the beginning of the semester of its completion. 
  • Once your complete GIS application is reviewed and approved by the department and the Graduate School, the designation will be posted to your academic record.
