• Counts toward the Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization (GIS) in Second Language Studies

• FR 8301 is not a prerequisite

New for SP2027: AI and Vocabulary Learning

Students will critically evaluate AI-generated vocabulary activities and revise them using principles from the course. 

Topics include:

• key issues in second language vocabulary acquisition 
• what it means to know a word
• incidental and intentional vocabulary learning 
• lexical input processing and vocabulary learning 
• form, meaning, and form-meaning mapping 
• repetition, retrieval, and elaboration 
• evidence-based vocabulary instruction 
• multimodal and enhanced lexical input 
• variability in lexical input 
• AI and vocabulary learning

Coursework may include:

• weekly discussion and discussion facilitation 
• evidence-based vocabulary activity 
• video presentations 
• AI vocabulary activity 
• final project option: instructional materials or research proposal
